Pettis Injured, Korean Zombie Steps in to Fight Aldo at UFC 163

UFC president Dana White sent out a tweet earlier today revealing the news that former #1 UFC lightweight contender, Anthony Pettis (16-2), had injured his knee and was out of his divisional debut against featherweight champion, Jose Aldo (22-1) at UFC 163. Pettis dropped to featherweight for this bout in an attemt to steal gold at the lighter division:

Now it seems that Pettis will have to put things on hold.

Stepping in for Pettis will be Chan-Sung Jung (13-3). Jung was expected to take on Ricardo Lamas on the UFC 162 card on June 6th. Jung is on a three-fight win streak and is returning to action after his fight with Dustin Poirier which earned both ‘Fight of the Night’ and ‘Submission of the Night’ bonus’. Jung has received a bonus for each of his three UFC fights.

No opponent has been named for Lamas who, at this time, remains on the UFC 162 main card.

UFC 163 takes place at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 3rd. The main card starts at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Devastated! Was really looking forward to seeing Pettis challenge Aldo’s dominance. Not sure Korean Zombie will present him with the same challenge.

  2. Magoo says:

That fukn blows! Would have rather seen Lama instead of the zombie,

Good luck against Aldo, he’s the champ for a reason. As much as i like Chang Sung, this should test him thoroughly. We’ve haven’t seen a UFC champ that’s born from the East Asian countries, so this should be like a “Cain for Mexico” type of situation. Good for him! Represent! I like good ol’ stories of “fighting for the country’s pride”, it might not factor a lot in a fight, but it sure as hell make the event center more “eventful” (case in point, other Canadiens cheering and rocking the Bell Centre in Canada for GSP, Aldo runs out the cage to celebrate with the crowd in Brazil).

  4. Steve O says:

News flash Cain is American not Mexican! I don’t go around calling myself Irish because my great great grandparents came from there
I’m still an American. Its a much bigger deal for Sung

yeah, but your dad didnt worked his ass off in his own country , till he saved enough money to move in america, for his family, thats what brown pride stands for and his mexican decsendence, your dad was probly going at the corner IRISH PUB to get a couple beers. try harder

      • K2 says:

Actually a majority of Irish immigrants came to America because of the Potato Famine. So they themselves were leaving a devastated country. So they had to save enough money to buy a boat ticket to come here rather than sneak across the border like cockroaches.

Honestly I’d rather see Pettis fight Bendo anyway, I think he has more to offer at 155 than 145. Still sucks though it was a great matchup.

  7. doc says:

Zombie deserves this fight anyway. Pettis and Aldo will come…

  8. Bob'O says:

Man I wanted to see that fight so bad. Unbelievable. ~Bob’O

  9. The natural says:

There gonna put Edgar vs lamas oliverias gonna have to find an opponent

  10. Justin says:

WTF!!! So pissed off about this! I know shit happens and it happens very often in MMA training, but you got to think about the fans. This fight should still happen, give the fans this fight as soon as Pettis recovers.

  11. Dddddddd says:

    No funkin way!

  12. KIDD433 says:

This is a turn of events.I was really looking forward to to seeing Aldo and Pettis, since it was a super fight, but The Zombie is a bad MFKR too.He has well earned a title shot and would give Aldo a hell of a fight.I’m a fan of both of these guys, and its a tough one to call. The stakes are definitely still high since The Zombie can be the first Asian UFC champion in history. This taking place in Brazil makes it an even bigger deal for Aldo, and a negative for The Zombie, but shit imagine if The Zombie pulls it off!Holy shit!

  13. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

Aldo will probably beat the Zombie. Pettis can fight Henderson at a later stage this year and I think he can beat him again. Then Aldo will move up and fight Pettis for the 155 title.

  14. GRT 3000 says:

    this fuckin’ blows…
