Pena’s Injuries Include Damage to Multiple Knee Ligaments, Could Be Out 2 Years
As previously reported, Julianna Pena suffered a severe injury that forced her out of her bout with Jessica Andrade at UFC 171, and now more details are now known about the injury. According to a report by MMAfighting, she suffered a severe knee injury while grappling, damaging her ACL, MCL, LCL, and meniscus. However, her doctors believe that she’ll make a full recovery after surgery, which Pena will be undergoing next Thursday. Her estimated recovery time is unknown, though it will probably be significant. UFC President Dana White stated that she will bout out for two-years with the injury.
Pena (5-2, 1-0 UFC)quickly became a rising prospect after winning TUF, where she racked up 3 wins, including an upset over early favorite Shayna Baszler. Her withdrawal leaves Andrade (10-3, 1-1 UFC) without an opponent at UFC 171. However, Sara Kaufman was quick to offer her services as a replacement, tweeting “With Pena out I want in at #ufc171! Back to Texas and this time judges won’t be able to get it wrong.” Kaufman (16-3, 0-1 UFC), is referring to the judging in her last fight, a close split-decision loss to Jessica Eye, where many, including Kaufman herself, believed that she should have gotten the nod. UFC 171 takes place on March 15th in Dallas, Texas.
