Overeem-JDS most likely pushed to this summer | UFC NEWS

It’s off again. The much-anticipated Heavyweight match-up between Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos has been cancelled. An undisclosed injury to Overeem has forced him to withdraw from the UFC 160 fight. Instead of replacing Overeem with a different opponent the UFC is now likely just to push the fight to a summer event.

This is the second time the UFC tried to get this fight to happen. The first time was at UFC 146, but because of a failed drug test Overeem was denied a license in Nevada. When news of the injury surfaced Mark Hunt threw his name in the ring as a possible replacement. Hunt, who is coming off a terrific KO victory over top Heavyweight contender Stefan Struve, went to twitter to rally up his fan base to secure his spot. Dana White though tweeted this response from a fan that pleaded for Hunt to be the replacement:

Both fighters are looking to get back on track in the Heavyweight division after suffering recent defeats. Overeem recently lost at UFC 156 in an upset to Antonio Siva by a third round KO. While JDS lost in dominating fashion to Cain Velasquez in a Heavyweight championship title fight at UFC 155.

For now, it seems the UFC is OK with letting Overeem heal and letting him fight JDS this summer in a title elimination fight.
