Nova Uniao coach wants Aldo vs. Pettis at a catchweight

UFC featherweight champion and longtime division ruler, Jose Aldo, appeared to be lightweight-bound, this after defeating Ricardo Lamas 49-46 on each of the judges scorecards at UFC 169 in Newark, N.J. last weekend.

“Scarface” stated his desire to fight the UFC’s lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis, at the UFC 169 post-fight press conference:

“It’s not only about me, I want the (Pettis) fight, the fans want the fight. So why not?” said Aldo. “We’re ready to fight, so lets get this fight!”

UFC President supported Aldo’s wishes by stating the following:

“Sounds like we got a fight. There you go, that was easy. Got that deal done. One more thing I do not have to do on Monday.”

Unfortunately, not everyone is on board with the stipulations of this fight, including Aldo’s longtime Nova Uniao coach, Andre Pederneiras, who told Ta na Area (via MMAFighting) that perhaps a 150-pound catchweight bout would best serve the promotion:

“(A catchweight) would be interesting for both, they would keep the belts and do the fight everybody wants to see. Nobody wants to take the other’s title, we want to see the fight and do a great show for everybody. Aldo would move up a little, Pettis cuts a little, and it’s good for everybody.”

Aldo’s win over Lamas marked his 17th straight victory and 6th UFC title defense. “Scarface’s” lone loss came back in November of 2005 in a lightweight bout.

Meanwhile, Pettis has yet to defend his UFC lightweight championship since earning the strap with his first-round submission of Ben Henderson at August’s UFC 164 event in Milwaukee.

Since debuting with the UFC in June of 2011, “Showtime” has massed 5 octagon appearances, four of which he came out victorious.

“It’s going to be a tough fight, like all the others,” Pederneiras said. “I always say that the next fight is always the toughest. It’s going to be just like another fight. I think that Aldo has all the weapons to beat Pettis. I don’t see many advantages for Pettis in this match-up.”

So, the saga to get a UFC “Super Fight” signed, sealed and delivered continues. What would you prefer to see Penn Nation, Aldo move up to 155 to challenge Pettis for the lightweight belt? Or a catchweight bout between the pair of division rulers? Sound off!

  2. The natural says:

That’s stupid take the. 155 lb tittle and defend it who wants to c u fight Anthony pettis win then go back to 145 that makes no sense ur at a diff level whys this guy so worried bout fighting at 155

  3. magoo says:

I’m assuming his coach wants him to stay at 45 and keep the title if he’s looking for a catch weight fight. I’m good with that….it’s just a great fight I’d love to see!

  4. UFC 84 Forever says:

No make Aldo go up to 55 so that BJ can nab the belt at 45 after he stomps Frankie in the third fight. Think about it Dede you can have a champ in three weight classes and rule each division.

  5. MixedMartialArts says:

Umm, STFU TRAINER.. LMAO.. He should go to 155 so he can hold TWO titles.. Why not put something on the line… PusssyCatttt

  6. Phlthy Rich says:

Some peopke are so stupid. Why would you vacate a title? Boxing has it the ufc would be stupid not t entertain the idea of a guy holding 2 titles. Why should pettis retain the belt at 155 if he cant beat aldo. And why should aldo have to give up his belt if no one in his division can beat him. Maybe the use of interim belts would be good for situations where a champ clears out a division and wants another challenge. You can remove them fro the picture and let the talent pool develop.
Nobody wants to see dudes lose interest in the game from winning too much too dominantly. I meanif your undefeated champ is ready to leave the belt cuz hes basically bored. You need to re evaluate your top 10 lists

The fight should be @ 155 lbs. Pettis was on his way down to fight Aldo @145 , when he got hurt. Well now Aldo should be prepared to go to Pettis’s weight . And sadly Pederneiras is mistaken , Pettis has way more cardio than Aldo
