With news that the Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen rematch has been shifted from UFC 147 to UFC 148, the UFC has now opted to put the rematch between Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva in the headlining slot for UFC 147.
UFC 147 is expected to go down on June 23 at the Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Originally scheduled to take place in a soccer stadium in Rio with Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen, UFC 147 is still a huge work in progress.
The two middleweights recently finished the taping of the first ever international edition of the UFC’s hit reality series “The Ultimate Fighter”.
In their first bout Vitor Belfort was able to dispatch Wanderlei Silva with ease, earning a TKO victory at the UFC’s “Ultimate Brazil” event (1998) in just 44-seconds of the very first round.
Since that initial matchup the two have both achieved greatness in their respective careers. Wanderlei ruled over PRIDE’s middleweight division with an iron fist and Vitor traveled the globe taking out plenty of top notch competition, including winning a UFC title against Randy Couture in 2004.
Belfort last saw action submitting Anthony Johnson in the very first round to give him his second straight victory since losing a bid at the UFC’s middleweight title against Anderson Silva.
Wanderlei on the other hand has dropped six of his last nine bouts and as such has drawn talks of retirement. He did however make a successful comeback against Cung Le at UFC 139 to get back on track. With 11 seconds left in the second round of action he was able to take Le off his feet with strikes and earn a TKO stoppage.
