Will 2014 Be The Year Of MMA Legalization In New York?

ALBANY – Supporters of mixed martial arts began fighting a new fight, this past Tuesday. Or rather, a new battle in a war that’s been raging on for quite some time.

A contingent of Ultimate Fighting Championship fighters, officials and fans traveled to Albany, hoping to coerce lawmakers to authorize the sport which has been granted legality in every other state in the country.

For what it’s worth, the state Senate has passed the measure for the last few years; the trouble has always been getting the state Assembly to “see the light”.

The female members of the Senate would prove to be the UFC’s downfall last year, as many of those members believed the sport was “barbaric”, and that it glorifies violence against women. This seemingly ignorant (and sexist) point of view is one that Liz Carmouche took issue with, during a break at the Capitol.

In society, it’s hard for some to view women getting hit,” said Carmouche. “They see the women as different figures rather than as athletes and fighters.”

Carmouche also spoke about the economic benefits that the UFC would bring to the area, as well as what the sport has done for her on a personal level.

The potential for bringing MMA and the UFC into New York is going to raise $135 million in revenue and that opens up jobs and opportunities for everyone involved. I know that’s exactly what it did for me. After serving in the Marine Corps for five years, doing three tours to Iraq, I came back with nothing. I had no job, no sense of direction and that’s exactly what MMA provided for me”.

We’ll keep you posted with any new developments, Penn Nation.
