Before I met BJ Penn, I had been a part of a performance troupe called The West Coast Demo Team. The team leader, my instructor as well, was Master Ernie Reyes, Sr. of San Jose, California. When I first took BJ to California (the first time, I believe, BJ had ever been on the mainland from Hawaii), we went to San Jose for Master Reyes’ 50th birthday party. BJ and I had gone to Ralph Gracie’s school earlier in the day to train.

This particular performance from way back in 1991 was for a martial arts convention in Florida. I remember it in particular as it was the same day we had heard the great Hawaiian martial arts master teacher, Ed Parker, had passed away. This is just a little clip of the demo, but it contains a young Ernie Reyes, Jr. and a fine performance from national kata champion Kim Do. I’m the bald guy, of course.
