Holly Holm had the odds stacked against her as she was walking into the octagon on Saturday evening at “UFC 193” in Melbourne, Australia. Based on the fact alone that Ronda Rousey had been on a tear before-hand, bookies and critics counted Holm out entirely as soon as the fight was announced.
With millions of fans, not necessarily rooting for her to lose, but rather for Rousey to win was going to be difficult for Holm to tune out in the weeks leading into the fight. Her coaches, training partners, friends and family always showed full support for the challenger and she stormed into the cage and did them proud. Holm picked apart Rousey and proved to not only be the better striker in the opening round, but ultimately knocked the queen out in the second round with a brutal headkick.
Holm realized her dream of winning a championship in the octagon just three fights into her UFC career and was put on the spot to thank everybody she could in her post-fight speech. When reality finally caught up with her, the emotional dump came and you could tell how gracious she was to soak in such a rare moment.
