With Alexander Gustafsson suffering a cut above his eye while training just days before his UFC on Fuel TV 9 fight slated against Gegard Mousasi, Wanderlei Silva tweeted yesterday that the UFC had approached him about filling in for the fight. Today, he revealed that, while he will not be fighting this Saturday, he is one of the sport’s better practical jokers.
Today, Silva took to Twitter, saying, “I catch you wand the best April first ever!! But I would like this to be true!!!” with this accompanying photo on Instagram. A clever prank indeed, Silva’s claims were just this side of believable, especially given the recent news of Gustafsson’s injury.
In an interesting change of events, though, it was revealed today that the Swedish MMA Federation did not clear Alexander Gustafsson to fight this Saturday. The UFC has not commented on the status of the main event as fight week continues to move forward. The event will take place this Saturday, April 6, at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm.
