With his recent dismissal of fighting Tim Kennedy, UFC middleweight fighter Vitor Belfort insisted that unless he is to fight for the title, he must fight in another weight class. UFC light heavyweight fighter, Chael Sonnen, was quick to express interest in facing the Brazilian fighter.

Through his wife and manager Vitor Belfort quickly dismissed the idea that he would fight Tim Kennedy. Now, it seems, Chael Sonnen would be interested in meeting Belfort’s conditional catchweight bout.
It was recently reported that UFC President Dana White and Kennedy both said the fight was being worked out, but Belfort insisted that the only fight he would take at middleweight would be a title shot against the winner of Anderson Silva v. Chris Weidman 2.
Kennedy confirmed via Twitter that his potential fight with Belfort had been scrapped, saying, “The fight against @vitorbelfort never materialized. I want to thank for @danawhite and @lorenzofertitta it was an honor to be considered.”
On Tuesday night’s episode of “UFC Tonight” on Fuel TV, Chael Sonnen reported that Belfort wanted to face him.
“Vitor and I can never quite seem to get this right,” said Sonnen. “I’ve never called him out, and now every time he calls me out, it always coincidentally seems to be whenever I have got my plate full.”
Indeed, Sonnen has an upcoming fight against Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 on August 17. Sonnen did say that he would be willing to face Belfort at UFC 168, the same card on which Silva and Weidman will rematch for Weidman’s newly acquired belt.
A win in that fight could conveniently place Belfort as the next in line for the middleweight belt, something that Sonnen said he is after himself.
“He has a title of number-one contender,” Sonnen said of Belfort on ‘UFC Tonight.’ “If he’s willing to put that on [the] line, not only will I’ll fight him, but I’ll do it on December 28. Weidman defends his title, Rousey defends her title, and Vitor, you have a title and I want you to defend it against me.”
Most likely, scheduling this fight will have to wait for Sonnen to fight Shogun. In the meantime, Vitor Belfort can continue calling out heavyweights like Roy Nelson.Tags: Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen, Chris Weidman, mma, MMA NEWS, Ronda Rousey, ufc, UFC 168, ufc fight night, ufc news, UFC on FOX Sports 1, Vitor Belfort
