UFC on FOX Sports 1 inaugural card continues to build up to be one of the best cards we have seen since UFC 100. The latest addition to the already stacked event features a bantamweight scrap between Urijah Faber and Yuri Alcantara. UFC on FS1 1 has already announced a plethora of amazing fights including Thiago Alves against Matt Brown and Joe Lauzon facing Michael Johnson. The biggest fight officially announced to date will pit former Strikeforce and K-1 Grand Prix champion Alistair Overeem against heavyweight handful Travis Browne. Now the card will also see two of the best bantamweights clash in what should be a very entertaining fight.
Urijah Faber (28-6) is riding a two-fight win streak with finishes of both Scott Jorgensen at the TUF 17 Finale in April, and Ivan Menjivar at UFC 157 back in February. The “California Kid” finished Jorgensen and Menjivar via rear naked choke, bringing him to 7 finishes by RNC in his pro career. Faber has fought for a title four times since 2009, and has been unable to taste victory, losing all four by decision. Faber appears to be on the cusp of yet another crack at the title with a win over Yuri Alcantara on August 17th in Boston, and we can be sure he will be looking to gain more momentum towards the title. With the recent surge in finishing coming out of Team Alpha-Male being credited to Duane Ludwig, one can assume Urijah Faber will be looking to score a big finish in Bruin country.
Faber’s opponent, Yuri Alcantara, is also coming off a big finish with his KO victory over Iliarde Santos at UFC on FX 8 on May 18th. Alcantara has gone 1-1-1 in his last three outings, although the no-contest was disputed as it in result of blows to the back of the head against Pedro Nobre. The biggest win Yuri holds to date is a huge KO victory over current featherweight contender Ricardo Lamas at WEC 53 in December of 2010. With 12 wins by KO and 12 by submission the BJJ blackbelt could pose some big problems for Urjiah Faber. Alcantara will be looking to make his own impression on the bantamweight division with a big win over Urijah Faber.
UFC on FOX Sports 1-1 takes place August 17th at the TD Bank Garden Arena in Boston, Massachusetts. The card will serve as the FOX Sports 1 debut program, and is set to become the new home of future UFC events. The main event has yet to be announced, but UFC President Dana White has stated that the company has something big in the works. What does Penn Nation think? Will Urijah Faber continue to march towards another shot at the bantamweight strap? Will Yuri Alcantara get the upset and plant his own flag in the division?
