Urijah Faber, possibly the biggest draw in the UFC under 155 pounds, believes he is a better fighter all-around than Michael McDonald.
Although he hasn’t tasted UFC gold, Faber has a storied career as the long-time WEC featherweight champion. When the WEC merged with the UFC, Faber dropped to bantamweight, and has since won five of his seven fights, and has only lost in title fights to current UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and current interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao.
Faber faces young bantamweight contender McDonald this Saturday Dec. 14 at UFC on FOX 9, and he said between him and McDonald, he is the more well-rounded fighter.
“I know that I’m a durable guy. I go against guys everyday like Chad Mendes, who is on a four-fight knockout streak. Joseph Benavidez has been knocking guys out. T.J. Dillashaw has been knocking guys out. I’ve been drilling with those guys everyday,” Faber said. “I’ve fought guys like Jose Aldo and Renan Barao, so I’m prepared for a dangerous fight, and I feel like I am the better fighter all around.”
Although Faber thinks he is the more well-rounded fighter, he still acknowledges that the McDonald fight is a tough match up.
“I was watching some of his fights again last night and he has a real gift for striking. He’s got super accurate punches. He’s got good structure on his punches. If he catches his guy on the right spot, he puts them out and we’ve seen that time and time again,” Faber said. “We’ve also seen guys that he’s fought… Funny, it usually seems to be the smaller guys that he’s fought that give him more trouble. … I think it might be a speed thing possibly. The guy’s tough, so I have to be aware of that.”
Current bantamweight champion Cruz, who is a long-time rival of Faber’s, agrees with The California Kid’s assessment that McDonald has a tough test this weekend against the former WEC featherweight champ.
“I think he’s going to beat him down. Definitely. Faber is going to take him down and [McDonald is] going to close his guard. Instead of using his guard to stand up and beat the crap out of Faber like he should, he’s going to close his guard and Faber is going to elbow him to death or guillotine him,” Cruz said.
Faber hopes that with a victory over McDonald, he will get another crack at the title after Cruz and Barao have their title unification bout, which is scheduled for UFC 169.
If you look at the rankings for the last three fights I’ve been ranked pretty high up there, I think number one or number two,” he said. “I’ve been winning. Michael McDonald is the other guy right behind me. A big win against him and it would make sense.”
