Uriah Faber ready to “get a little dirty” with Renan Barao at UFC 169

In recent MMA news, former UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz was forced to pullout of his unification bout with Renan Barao at UFC 169 due to a groin tear. The bout was expected to be Cruz highly awaited return after almost two and a half years from being away from the sport. However, with another injury in the way the champ had no other choice but to give up his title. On three weeks notice, the UFC turned to one of their most highly decorated fighters, Urijah Faber, in order to fill the vacancy. This bout will be a rematch between Faber and Barao.

Barao won their last match-up, the interim title bout at UFC 149, by unanimous decision. The fight was rather one sided as Barao was able to best Faber at almost every turn. However, that does not seem to detour Faber as he heads into the rematch.

“I think he’ll probably try to do the same thing he did last time to me, which slowed the pace down, tit for tat standing, and get a couple more kicks and a couple more punches landed. But I’m going to try to make this a lot more intense fight,” said Faber. “I hate being in fights that aren’t super exciting, and I’m going to try to make this as exciting as possible and get the finish. … I want to pick the pace up and get in his face. I want to make it a fight that we both have to get a little dirty.”

He continued:

“I think the difference with he and I in our last fight was very small, but I’ve got to make sure this time I move it in my direction so I beat him to the punch, so I make sure to implement my game plan and make sure that I implement my will on him.”

Faber is currently on a four fight win streak after losing the interim title fight to Barao. Faber’s most recent victory coming by way of guillotine choke at the expense of Michael McDonald at UFC on Fox 9.

Barao also fought against McDonald submitting him in the fourth and then against Eddie Wineland at UFC 165 in which he won via TKO in the second round.

With Cruz being out indefinitely Renen Barao is currently the undisputed bantamweight champion. Faber has been hunting for gold for many years now, and this will be yet another test of “The California Kid”s skills to see if he is worthy of a UFC title.

UFC 169 is set to take place at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on February 1. Jose Aldo defends his featherweight title against Ricardo Lamas for the co-main event to round out the evening.
