Originally slated for sometime in early 2014, the UFC still intends to debut in the country of Mexico – but Dana White says that they’ll most likely wait for the UFC’s first Mexican-American champion Cain Velasquez to recover from surgery first (shown above).

Following a successful shoulder surgery, Cain Velasquez is looking to return to action sometime next year; and with him, the UFC will look to finalize its debut in Mexico.

Following Velasquez’ last title defense at UFC 166 against Junior dos Santos, the UFC looked to have the heavyweight champ headline its debut event in the country of Mexico.  Unfortunately, Velasquez suffered a shoulder injury that would require surgery and ultimately push back the UFC’s southern migration indefinitely.

UFC President Dana White spoke with media following UFC on FOX 9 this past Saturday, addressing the UFC’s intention to go to Mexico; and White said that they intend to wait for Velasquez to be healthy.

Me and Lorenzo [Fertitta] were talking the other day about going to Mexico without Cain,” White told MMAjunkie during the media scrum.  “I just don’t think it’s a good idea.  I say we wait.

Velasquez was expected to face Fabricio Werdum, but those plans have been sidelined with the champion’s surgery.  Werdum expressed his desire in waiting for Velasquez’s return, but UFC executives have expressed their own interest in having the challenger face the winner of the upcoming heavyweight bout between Josh Barnett and Travis Browne at UFC 168.

Even with a Pay-Per-View event in Mexico delayed indefinitely, the UFC still intends to expand into the country.  White confirmed plans for a season of “The Ultimate Fighter” to take place in Mexico sometime in the near future.  Specifics about that venture remain unclear.
