| What a great fight! Just like every other fight on the main card tonight this fight was quick and explosive and didn’t take more than five minutes! Both men had a ton riding on tonight and a win was essential. But Thiago Silva came out the victor, coming away with a first round KO at 4:29 into the fight.
The start of the fight was going Cavalcante’s way. The first 3 minutes of the fight belonged to him as he came out landing big, powerful strikes and was smoothly slipping everything that Silva was throwing. His defense was standing out most to me at the start of the fight. “Feijao” was honestly looking better than I had ever seen him on the feet but that didn’t last long as Silva, seemingly at the push of a button, took over the fight with 2 minutes remaining in the round.
Silva turned up the pace and as he did, almost at the exact same time, Cavalcante started looking flat-footed, lost all pop in his punches, and couldn’t get out of the way of Silva’s mean, bunched-up punches.
Silva was taking over the pace and backing up Cavalcante up against the fence and with about 30 seconds remaining in round one Silva landed a nasty left hook that was followed up by clean right uppercut and “Feijao” dropped to the canvas and Silva walked over to the camera and did his signature ‘thumb across the throat’ gesture in lei of his impressive victory.
It’s as if Silva knew he had to weather an early storm and right when he felt he could take over the fight he decided to end it. That, my friends, was impressive. It was a very impressive performance and Silva has hushed all critics of rumors that he was a competitor of the past. Although Silva has had his recent troubles with his last two wins being changed to no-contests this win could place him right in the top mix of light heavyweight competition. Now let’s just hope that his post-fight drug test comes back clean.
