Lightweight Joe Lauzon got back on the winning track to kick off the main card of UFC on Fox 9: Johnson vs. Benavidez 2 in Sacramento, California.
Lauzon bloodied Mac Danzig and earned a 30-27 unanimous decision victory.
Lauzon, 29, improves to 23-10. Danzig drops to 29-12-1.
In the first round, Lauzon scored a takedown near the four-minute mark and soon transitioned to mount. Lauzon went for an armbar and Danzig was able to get out of a tough situation. Lauzon was unsuccessful with another submission attempt and the fight got back on its feet at the two-minute mark. The pair kept grinding in the clinch against the cage, with Danzig landing a nice elbow. Lauzon got his second takedown of the round and landed a solid elbow around the 30 second mark.
In the second round, the pair worked in the clinch again and Danzig started to loosen up. Danzig tried a trip but landed up on bottom before the two-minute mark. Lauzon did some of the most damage in the fight when he landed two powerful elbows that opened Danzig up across his nose. Lauzon eventually transitioned from side control and then to mount trying an armbar as the round ended.
Lauzon was more measured to start the third and Danzig was pressing the action early. Danzig went to the body and landed a straight right. Lauzon landed another nice trip for a takedown. Once on the ground, Lauzon smothered Danzig and transitioned to a mounted crucifix where Lauzon continued to deliver damage. Lauzon continued to work for the submission but Danzig defended smartly and wisely.
Lauzon and Danzig, were both coming off two straight losses and both were 1-3 in their last four fights heading in.
