It was Henderson who pulled out a split decision victory in one of the closest fought bouts in recent memory to retain his championship.
So to no surprise, the dominant talk of the press conference was about the Henderson/Melendez donnybrook and if an immediate rematch was on the horizon.
UFC president Dana White put an end to the speculation when he closed the press conference by stating that the winner of Gray Maynard vs. TJ Grant in May at UFC 160 will get the next shot at Henderson.
Here are some of the highlights from the post-fight press conference.
“I knew it was close. I thought I had lost the first round and won the next four. He did a great job of dictating and making me go backwards.”
“The 155 division is so stacked and so deep. The top five, top 10 guys are so close. Will I be seeing (Melendez) again? Yeah. I don’t think it will be immediate but if so, that’s cool.”
“Heartbroken. My heart’s broken. That’s it.”
“I took my feet off the gas. He adjusted pretty well as well.”
“This is a dream come true, just being here.”
Daniel Cormier won a unanimous decision over Frank Mir.
“I laid an egg a little bit. I felt tired. I think it was my nerves.”
“You can’t ignore (the boos).”
“I have to get better at jiu-jitsu.”
“I’d be ready to fight right away at heavyweight. I don’t think that performance warranted (a title) shot.”
“If you can beat a two-time champ and feel bad, there must be something positive.”
Josh Thomson won via a devastating knock out of Nate Diaz. Diaz reportedly has a cut on his head down to the bone.
“I never played (the fight) going like this.”
“I picked him apart. I didn’t get caught up in the banter.”
Matt Brown earned Fight of the Night honors with his win over Jordan Mein
“I wouldn’t be coming to work every day if I wasn’t thinking about a title shot. I believe my time is coming.”Tags: benson henderson, Daniel Comier, Gilbert Melendez, Josh Thomson, Matt brown, MMA NEWS, ufc news, UFC on FOX 7
