“The funny thing you should say about Jon Jones and him saying he wants some time off, he called up four days ago and said ‘okay, let’s go I’m done with vacation.’ He said he wanted to take all this time off and then they were calling me four days ago saying he wants to fight as soon as possible. He’s ready to go… What could end up happening is Dan Henderson fights Jon Jones first, and then it would be close to the time that Rashad (Evans) fights. Or we see how things go with Rashad and Rashad fights him first.”
In a recent interview with ESPN radio UFC president Dana White dropped a bombshell when he said that despite original plans, Dan Henderson may be next in line for a shot at the title of Jon Jones.
In the main event of UFC on FOX 2, Rashad Evans and Phil Davis are set to square off in a matchup that will give the winner number one contender status and a chance to face the champion Jon Jones. They were expected to be next in line.
In the world of Jones, following his successful title defense over Lyoto Machida, he had stated that he wanted an extended vacation from competition. After competing four-times in 2011 and taking out three-legends of the sport in the process it was expected that Jones would be out of action until summer 2012. However, that is no longer the case.
With Jones wanting to return to action as soon as possible, the only reasonable matchup for him is Dan Henderson. If he truly doesn’t want to wait for the Evans vs. Davis winner, this bout is the only one that makes sense.
In my estimation, if what White says is true, it will be Hendo vs. Jones at UFC 145 which is still in need of a headliner and will give each side enough time to have a successful training camp.
Let’s see what happens.
