We knew it was coming and alas, we have a date and location for the lightweight tilt scheduled between Joe Lauzon and Anthony Pettis.
Sources close to the situation confirmed the fight to BJPENN.COM this evening.
“UFC 144”, while not yet made official by the promotion, is expected to go down on February 26 live from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. As of current date, the event is expected to be headlined by a lightweight title fight between champion Frankie Edgar and challenger Benson Henderson.
Anthony Pettis came out publicly after beating Jeremy Stephens and requested a bout with Joe Lauzon. Lauzon, never backing down from a challenge was quick to accept and the fight became a lock from that point forward.
The UFC has jumped on board with both fighters’ wishes and have scheduled the bout which will bring the winner one more step closer to a title shot in a division that is thinning out in the contender department.
Lauzon was last seen taking out the highly regarded Melvin Guillard at UFC 136. Up until that point Guillard had positioned himself to be in line for a title shot, however Lauzon took him out quick and dropped him to the mat with strikes before taking dominant position on the ground and choking him out in the first frame of action. The win marked the second straight for Lauzon, who seems to be living up to the potential everyone has expected from him for the past several years.
Pettis is coming off of a UFC 136 win of his own. After a disappointing loss against Clay Guida in his UFC debut the one-time number one contender lost his chance at merging the WEC and UFC titles and was forced out of the title picture. His last bout at the aforementioned UFC 136 showed a more focused and determined Anthony Pettis as he took Jeremy Stephens out of his game with a dominant ground assault to outpoint the longtime stand out and earn a split decision victory.
