UFC NEWS – Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz Booked For UFC on FOX 2

The UFC’s second appearance on network television just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of a middleweight number one contender bout between Mark Munoz and Chael Sonnen.

UFC officials notified BJPENN.COM of the booking late yesterday evening.

UFC on FOX 2 is set to go down from Chicago’s United Center on January 28 live on FOX TV. In the main event, Phil Davis will square off with Rashad Evans for the number one contender seat in the UFC’s light-heavyweight division ruled over by Jon Jones. The co-feature of the evening is a middleweight number one contender bout between Mark Munoz and Chael Sonnen.

Chael Sonnen appeared to be locked for a title shot against Anderson Silva. UFC President Dana White even went as far as to state that he would be a fool not to put Chael in the cage with the middleweight champion. However, after word got out that Silva is on the shelf until June of 2012, Sonnen apparently wanted to stay active and will now face Munoz for the number one contender seat.

Munoz has been riding high since entering the UFC’s middleweight division. The former training partner to Anderson Silva recently stated his case for a title shot after destroying Chris Leben in the UFC 138 main event. The top ranked fighter has only dropped one-fight since moving to the 185 pound weight class and that was to Yushin Okami at UFC on Versus 1 via a very close split-decision.

The two fighters faced off in college on the wrestling circuit and it was Munoz who walked away with the victory.
