Luckily for Askren, UFC chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta has agreed to sit down with the dominant wrestler, but it still seems unlikely that Askren and the UFC will be able to work out a deal.
“We’re gonna meet with him on Monday. We’re just not going to sign him,” White said at a press conference earlier in the week.
Askren’s chances to make his dream of fighting the best welterweights in the world in the UFC seem bleak, but he does have other options.
“He can go to World Series of Fighting where there’s actually some competition for him,” White said. “There’s no competition for him at…[Bellator].”
“At least at WSOF he can get some competition and test himself,” White said.
Askren is a free agent, and has received an offer from World Series of Fighting, but seems set on making the UFC his home.
“I always have been clear with my motivations and what I want to do,” Askren told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I don’t try to hide my feelings or what I think. I want to beat the number 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 guys and think I can.”
For now, it seems he may have to settle for fighting in World Series of Fighting until he earns the respect of the UFC brass.
