Lightweights Jorge Masvidal and Al Iaquinta left it all in the octagon tonight in this Fight of the Night worthy performance!
Jorge Masvidal walked into the octagon tonight as the underdrog, but he quickly proved to the bookies that he was on the same level as Al Iaquinta, if not a step above. If only the judges were watching the same fight as the fans in attendance.
“Raging” Al Iaquinta seemed stiff in the opening round and he was not prepared for Masvidal to be so loose early on. Masvidal was able to dominate the round as he found a comfortable distance to strike from where Iaquinta couldn’t counter. Whenever Iaquinta was getting desperate for some offense, he would shoot a long distance takedown which left him susceptible to some brutal shots.
Iaquinta’s second round went much better, but he still found little success with his takedowns. Masvidal stuffed eight takedowns by the time ten minutes was in the books and it looked like Iaquinta would have to rely on his strikes to win the bout.
Iaquinta tried his hardest in the final round to finish the fight so he could take the win home, but Masvidal countered that gameplan by keeping a safe distance.
It was a tough and grueling fight and the fans were expecting Masvidal to get his hand raised, but Iaquinta got the decision instead!
The crowd showered him with a chorus of boos and he cursed them out before walking out of the octagon.
Al Iaquinta def. Jorge Masvidal by way of Split Decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)
