Iuri Alcantara walked into the octagon as the heaviest favorite of the night, but Frankie Saenz was on a mission to prove the bookies wrong! Saenz performance may not have been the most exciting to watch, however it got the job done and he left UFC Fight Night 61 with the biggest victory of his career.
Saenz proved right off the bat he was not going to shy away from Alcantara tonight by standing right in front of him and trading shots. Whenever it looked like Alcantara was going to gain the upper hand, Saenz would either turn the tables and reverse it or negate whatever attack Alcantara was throwing.
Saenz’s confidence grew throughout the fight where he gained a big amount of top control time in the second and third rounds. Whenever Alcantara tried to throw a submission up off of his back, Saenz showed fantastic defense. Alcantara landed a big shot in the second round, but that is the only bit of serious offense he racked up in tonight’s bout.
When the judges’ decision was read, it was official that the fifth straight underdog won tonight when Saenz’s hands were raised in victory.
Frankie Saenz def. Iuri Alcantara by way of Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
