| This was a huge fight for Kelvin Gastelum as he was making his debut fight at welterweight and was coming off of his TUF season winning win over Uriah Hall. He needed a big win to show his legitimacy in the UFC and he did just that against a great opponent in Brian Melancon.
The TUF 17 Champion came out pressing the pace of the fight from the opening horn and it didn’t take long for him to put his name on the contender-radar. Gastelum landed some nice strikes in the opening minute but Melancon was keeping him at bay with feints and hooks of his own.
However, about 2 minutes in Gastelum backed Melancon up until he was against the cage and then landed a huge four punch combo that saw every strike land. Melancon was rocked and to put the metaphorical ‘cherry on top’ of his striking combo he landed a beautiful uppercut that dropped Melancon to the canvas.
Melancon didn’t go all the way out as he fell to his base and Gastelum immediately jumped on his back, sunk in his hooks and locked on to a deep rear-naked choke. Melancon rolled, tried to fight the hands but it was only a matter of time before he tapped.
Just like that Kelvin Gastelum was headed home with a submission victory over Bryan Melancon via rear-naked choke at 2:26 of the very first round.
This victory now moves Gastelum’s MMA record to 8-0 and will likely skyrocket his name into the top half of the welterweight division. He may not get a top 10 opponent in his next fight (or maybe he will) but he will undoubtedly fight a big named opponent. We’ll be keeping our eye on this young gun as he continues to make a name for himself in the world’s largest MMA promotion.
