UFC 162 RESULTS: Frankie Edgar Puts on Impressive Performance to Outlast Charles Oliveira in Unanimous Decision Victory

July 6, 2013 9:18 pm by Jake Chastain

| These two men came out with a bang. Frankie was using his normal footwork and speed and was utilizing some good boxing. Oliveira did get the fight to the ground a couple of times in the round but Frankie defended submissions well. On the feet Frankie started landing some nice combinations late in the round and Oliveira landed a few solid kicks and jabs. Edgar ended the round with a takedown but Oliveira landed some nice elbows from the bottom before the horn sounded to close round 1.

Frankie came out sharp again in the second but Oliveira was landing some nice kicks and knees. Edgar continued to catch several of the kicks from Oliveira and eventually landed a nice right hand to follow that dropped Charles. They came back up but then Frankie quickly scored another takedown. From the top Oliveira landed some more elbows but Frankie also landed some big shots from the top. The fight came back up and Edgar landed a few nice combos and it was visibly clear that both men were cut at this point in the fight. Oliveira landed more kicks but nothing extremely significant with his hands. Edgar continued to move and make Oliveira chase him. Frankie scored one more takedown at the end of the round but narrowly escaped a tight guillotine choke as the horn sounded off to end the 2nd round. At this point, I would have hated to be a judge. The fight was really close at this point.

Oliveira was surprisingly keeping up with the pace of Edgar but in the third round Frankie landed some solid combinations that did some damage to Charles early in the round. Oliveira later landed some nice elbows and combinations of his own. He landed a knee that backed up Frankie and the two exchanged strikes, both scoring big points in my eyes but Edgar landed some big strikes with about two minutes remaining and he saw that Oliveira was momentarily stunned. He picked up the pace even more and landed several overhand rights that wobbled Oliveira. Edgar scored one more takedown at the end of the round and ended the fight with some ground and pound.

This was an extremely exciting fight and produced some very bright fireworks for UFC 162. Edgar came away with a well deserved decision victory and his skills were put on display for the world to see tonight. He had his hands full with Charles Oliveira and he kept his calm and used his veteran poise to really put a stamp on the victory at the end of the bout. Oliveira impressed the MMA world as well as he gave Edgar all he could handle in this potential Fight of the Night!

Edgar places himself back into the title fight with this huge win over Oliveira at UFC 162 and it will be interesting to see who the company wants to give “The Answer” next. The win tonight snapped a three fight losing streak but Edgar will likely draw a big name in his next bout.
