UFC 146 Switch Up | Herman In For Gonzaga Against Nelson, Jamie Varner Returns Against Barboza

Two major shifts in fighter health have caused yet another change to the plagued UFC 146 card.

Heavyweight stand out Gabriel Gonzaga and lightweight prospect Evan Dunham have both been forced to withdraw from the UFC 146 card in what is just the latest round of UFC 146 changes since the event was made official.

In the place of Gonzaga comes the always tough Dave “Pee-Wee” Herman and in for Dunham comes former WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner.

UFC officials announced the changes via UFC.Com late yesterday evening and BJPENN.COM has since confirmed the changes as official.

UFC 146 is set to take place on May 26 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The all heavyweight pay-per-view card is set to be headlined by a title fight between Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir.

Herman last saw action against Stefan Struve this past February where he picked up his first UFC loss and simultaneously snapped his three-fight winning streak.

Nelson has been the UFC 146 alternate since being added to the card.

Originally scheduled to face “Big Foot” Silva, he then got put against Gonzaga after it was learned that Overeem was removed from the event. However, now that Gonzaga is out he will now look across to cage at Herman, who is his third scheduled opponent.

Jamie Varner has had a long road back to the UFC.

After going 1-1 with the promotion in his first stint, he was released and packed down to the WEC where he was able to capture gold until meeting Benson Henderson (The current UFC champion). His time as champ saw two memorable outings against Donald Cerrone as well as many other remarkable performances. When the UFC merged with the WEC Varner was left on the sidelines, but has since racked up a 3-1 record on the regional circuit to come back to his promotional home and try to earn his keep.

Barboza last saw action at UFC 143 when he took out Terry Etim in a brutal head kick knockout. The Brazilian born phenom is undefeated in his four UFC bouts and plans on keeping it that way as he continue his climb to the top.
