Tyrone Spong is hopeful for a speedy recovery following his gruesome leg injury over the weekend while competing at GLORY 15 in Turkey.

Spong, who was facing Gokhan Saki in the finals of the light heavyweight tournament, suffered a broken shin when Saki checked a kick. He immediately hit the canvas, and was comforted just as quickly by his opponent.

On Monday, Spong released a statement via the Blackzilians official site indicating surgery was a success and that he is planning on returning to action yet this year.

“I want my family, friends and fans to know that I’m okay. The trip home to Florida was a long one and I am thankful to be back in Florida. I had surgery this morning and it went perfectly.

“My Doctors said it turned out to be a clean break and they feel confident that I will recover 100%. They said I can be training for a fight as early as 6 months if I rehab properly. I feel very optimistic. Thank you all for your support.”

Spong suffered his first kickboxing loss since a 2010 decision to Alistair Overeem in the quarterfinals of the K-1 World GP. He had won his last 10 matches and is 74-7-1 with one no-contest in his career.

As for MMA, Spong is 2-0 and signed to a contract with the World Series of Fighting. He was expected to compete for the promotion in July, but that is obviously off the table now.
