Two New Fights Added To UFC 170 Card

UFC 170 is getting two more fights added to its lineup.

UFC officials announced today that welterweights Stephen Thompson and TUF winner Robery Whittaker will square off for our viewing pleasure, as well as surging bantamweights Raphael Assuncao and Francisco Rivera.

UFC 170 will emanate out of the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Headlining the card will be a bout between Rashad Evans and a man making his debut in the light heavyweight division, Daniel Cormier.

Assuncao is on a five-fight winning streak, including two stoppage wins. All five victories have been in the bantamweight division – a weight class he joined in 2011.

Rivera also dropped to bantamweight in 2011, and is currently riding a 5-fight win streak as well. Rivera has a bit of a black eye in the division, however, as he was suspended after testing positive for a banned substance following his UFC 149 fight against Roland Delorme. To his credit, he’s tested clean ever since, and seems to have learned his lesson.

Thompson is on a two-fight win streak after a tough loss against Matt Brown last April. Thompson is a fun fighter to watch, as his karate and kickboxing background allows him to create some entertaining and flashy exchanges with his opponents.

Whittaker will be looking to bounce back from a split-decision loss to his fellow TUF winner, Court McGee. Before that setback, Whittaker was on a two-fight winning streak which included his TUF-winning victory over Brad Scott.

So far, the card shapes up as follows:

•Daniel Cormier vs. Rashad Evans
•Rory MacDonald vs. Demian Maia
•Rafael dos Anjos vs. Rustam Khabilov
•Mike Pyle vs. T.J. Waldburger
•Raphael Assuncao vs. Francisco Rivera
•Stephen Thompson vs. Robert Whittaker

Chadwick’s analysis: This is one of those cards where it could turn out to be a real sleeper hit, or rather uneventful. Cormier and Evans certainly have the talent to put on a great fight, but if Cormier has a rough weight cut, this could end up being a fight filled with “resting” takedowns and calls for action. Rory and Maia should be an entertaining matchup, but we will have to wait and see if Rory has found a way to rekindle his competitive fire. Khabilov and dos Anjos should be highly entertaining, and the rest of the card looks to have a lot of promise as well.

We’ll keep you posted on any future updates to the lineup.
