‘TUF 19: Penn vs. Edgar’ Episode 7 Recap – Team Edgar Earns The Upset

May 29, 2014 12:09 am by Connor Woodard

Tonight on Fox Sports 1, ‘The Ultimate Fighter Season 19: Penn vs. Edgar’ returned with another action packed episode.

If you missed it, here’s a recap:

The episode begins with the fighters discussing last week’s fight, and Team Edgar is not happy, believing that Stephens should have won the controversial decision.

However, Team Penn’s Roger Zapata believes that the endorsement from Dana White and the judges is all the justification he needs for his win.

Team Edgar’s Pat Walsh is an experienced wrestler who is in MMA for the challenge, and is happy to fight Team Penn’s Anton Berzin, despite Berzin’s reputation as a skilled fighter.

Berzin has no fear of fighting Walsh, whom he believes he’ll finish.

In the training room, Berzin gets in some work with Team Penn Coach, John Hacklemen, and B.J. believes that his number one 205lb pick is one of the most dangerous fighters on his team, and that he should handle Walsh without too much difficulty.

Team Penn coach Mark Coleman joins the two teams at the house to watch a UFC Brazil card, but the scene quickly devolves into the fighters arguing about the Zapata/Stephens fight again. Insults are hurled, and Daniel Spohn’s temper flares. However, the fighters eventually calm down before anyone can do anything drastic.

Pat Walsh vs Anton Berzin:

Round 1:
Walsh comes out aggresssive, but it’s Berzin who quickly gets a takedown and instantly transitions to the back. Walsh defends, stands up, and shoots for a takedown of his own, but Berzin stuffs it and takes his back again. Berzin gives up the position and lands a solid knee. Berzin looks to clinch up, but Walsh counters with a beautiful hip throw, and after landing a bit of ground and pound, pressures Berzin against the cage. The two eventually stand back in the middle of the cage, where they trade some strikes. Berzin eventually gets another takedown and again winds up on the back, but can’t maintain the position. The two trade some more strikes, but it’s Berzin’s leg and body kicks that seem to be landing more cleanly, while Walsh mostly swings and misses. Walsh completes another takedown, but Berzin immediately pops up and the round ends there.

Round 2:
Both fighters slow down a bit from the fairly heavy pace of the first round, but it appears Walsh is the fresher man, and he begins to scores with some solid punches on the fight. After throwing a successful body kick, Berzin immediately follows up with a lazy leg kick, which Walsh catches and turns into a big takedown. Walsh settles into Berzin’s half guard, and begins to throw punches and elbows from the top. Berzin eventually musters the energy for a big sweep, which he uses as a setup for an arm bar. It’s fairly deep for a second, but Walsh escapes and ends up back on top in Berzin’s half guard, where he looks to land more ground and pound, and the round ends with him on top. The fight is close, and it’s going to a third round.

Round 3:
Walsh looks to pressure early with some punches, and then takes down a tired Berzin with ease. Walsh begins to land punches from the top, and Berzin is clearly just trying to survive. Walsh gives Berzin no opportunity to catch his breath, and continues to attack with ground and pound from all angles. Berzin can’t do anything but keep Walsh in his half guard, and looks exhausted just doing that. Walsh briefly gets to mount, but Berzin quickly hip escapes. Berzin is able to stand up for a brief moment, but Walsh drags him back down and lands more punches until the round ends.

Patrick Walsh wins via decision

With the win, the two teams are once again tied up. Walsh offers a heartfelt apology to his team, and expresses regret at not listening to his corner’s advice more in the fight. The next fight is announced, and it’s team Edgar’s Eddie Gordon vs Team Penn’s Mike King.
