‘TUF 19: Penn vs. Edgar’ Episode 3 Recap – Team Penn Goes 2-0

April 30, 2014 8:38 pm by Connor Woodard

Tonight on Fox Sports 1, ‘The Ultimate Fighter Season 19: Penn vs. Edgar’ returned with another action packed episode.

If you missed it, here’s a recap:

The show opens to Cathal Pendred reflecting on his fight against Hector Urbina, and he discusses growing tensions in the house. After a tense conversation between the two, Hector jokingly threatens to “shank his ass.”

Back in the gym, Frankie Edgar brings in BJJ Master Renzo Gracie, and Renzo is impressed with the level of talent that he sees. He gives Todd Monaghan and the rest of the team some pointers, and stresses to the team the importance of having the right attitude.

We then see B.J. Penn showing technique, during their practice, and Daniel Spohn and the rest of the team are confident in the training that they’re getting. BJ believes that TUF will prepare the fighters for any fight, due to the grueling nature of the show.

Todd Monaghan discusses the importance of his Christianity, and he wants to teach a short sermon to the rest of the fighters once a week. During his speech to the fighters, he discusses a criminal past, and then talks about the various material goods that he’s been blessed with. Many of the fighters seem unimpressed, but humor him.

On the trip to a training session, Cathal Pendred and the rest of team Penn talk about the sermon, and seem to share the general sentiment that they weren’t a fan. Cathal points out that in his eyes, if Todd was a true follower of his religion, he would sell his worldly goods and give them to the poor.

During training, Spohn looks sharp and dangerous. His coaches believe that team Edgar will be expecting Spohn to strike, so B.J. and the others devise a game plan that has Spohn looking for takedowns and ground-and pound.

On the other team, Edgar looks to sharpen Todd’s skills, but expresses concern about some of the holes in his game. Edgar looks to fill some of those holes, and encourages Todd to keep forward pressure in the fight.

Back at the house, Cathal gets a few extra grappling mats for his room, which team Penn uses to get in some extra practice. Spohn takes the opportunity to show his teammates some of his traditional martial arts training, which he shows through a brief exercise routine.

On fight day, B.J. is interested in how relaxed Spohn’s warmup is compared to Monaghan, who can be heard yelling from the next room.

Todd Monaghan vs. Daniel Spohn:

Round 1:

Spohn catches todd with a punch early, and then immediately shoots for a takedown into half-guard. Spohn then transitions into mount, where he looks for an arm-triangle choke, which Todd eventually works out of. Todd is able to escape and stand up, but Spohn immediately takes him back down, but is forced to defend a kimura from Todd. Spohn eventually works his way out and transitions to Todd’s back, where he transitions to an arm bar. Todd escapes again, but Spohn finds his way back to the top, ending the round back in full mount.

Round 2:
Todd swarms with punches, but Spohn immediately ducks under and takes him down into side control. Todd is quickly up, but is quickly put back down. Todd again looks for a kimura from bottom, but it’s not there. Spohn works back to full mount, but Todd is able to shrimp back to half guard. Spohn takes his back with just seconds remaining, where he is able to lock up a rear-naked choke, but the fight ends before he can get the tap.

Daniel Spohn defeats Todd Monaghan via unanimous decision (20-18)

After the fight, Dana White is disappointed with both of the fighters. He is upset with Spohn for not looking to do much from the top position, and he is irate with Todd for refusing to listen to his corner’s instructions.

The next fight is picked, and it’s Team Penn’s Tim Williams vs Team Edgar’s Diegho Lima. Dana White believes that the fight should be exciting, saying that it would be impossible for it to be worse than the last one. Team Penn now leads the show 2-0.
