Transgender Fighter Fallon Fox Says She Has the Disadvantage

In a recent appearance on Inside MMA, transgender fighter Fallon Fox stated that when she steps into the cage with her opponents, she is the one at a disadvantage.

Over the past few months, many have commented on the unfair advantage they perceived Fox to hold over her opponents.  Ranging from the tirade of Matt Mitrione to the support from the Championship Fighting Alliance under which Fox fights.  A number of female mixed martial artists also weighed in, with UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate stating that Fox holds an unfair advantage.

This past weekend, however, Inside MMA spoke with Fox on the matter.  The fighter stated that the hormone therapy she has completed and continues to do puts her body at a sizeable disadvantage to her opponents.

“I’m actually at a disadvantage.  Before the surgery, I started hormone replacement… back in 2002, 2003… If I don’t take estrogen hormone replacement therapy, I can get osteoporosis.  So any of the women I’m compteting against, my testosterone levels are drastically lower than theirs; it’s almost nothing.”

About the surgery and the therapy, Fox added, “You remove that ability for the body to create large amounts of testosterone.”

Dr. Marci Bowers also spoke to Inside MMA.  Dr. Bowers is a gender-reassignment surgeon who has undergone the surgery herself.  She said of Fox, “If you measure her endurance and her strength, it’s actually that of a comparable woman of the same age.  What happens is after surgery patients actually regress in that their bone density drops to what a comparable woman of her size would be.

“When you test her, she’s going to come out with low testosterone levels and muscle mass that is remarkably similar to her counterparts.”

Fox is set to fight Allana Jones at CFA 11 this Friday, May 24, in Miami, Florida.
