Tonight on BJPenn.Com Radio: Gilbert Melendez, Urijah Faber, Bear Frazer & UFC on Fox 6 Review

January 27, 2013 8:49 am by Bryan Levick

Last night in Chicago the UFC & Fox invaded the United center for the second time in 12 months. This time around the fights were a bit more exciting and fans were treated to some thrilling finishes. Tonight on BJPenn.Com Radio, beginning at 7pm EST/6pm MST/4pm PST, hosts Bryan Levick and Mitch Ciccarelli will discuss last night’s events and whether or not Anthony Pettis and Ricardo Lamas should be next in line for title shots in their respective divisions. Both men finished their opponents in the first round in devastating fashion.

Light Heavyweight Glover Teixeira continued to impress as he defeated former champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in what may have been Jackson’s last fight for the promotion. Teixeira beat the 34-year-old Tennessee native on the feet and on the ground. Jackson showed he still has a lot of heart as he fought valiantly and gave Teixeira all he could handle. After the fight UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones paid Teixeira a visit backstage and said the two of them will make for a good fight. If the two men do meet it will certainly be worth watching.

John Dodson and Demetrious Johnson entertained the fans in Chicago for 25 minutes and for awhile it looked as though Dodson was about to become the new UFC flyweight champion, but Mighty Mouse turned up the heat from the third round on and proved to be too much for the Magician. It wouldn’t surprise me if we were to see these two fight again sooner rather than later. This may have been the bout that bolsters the 125lb. division in the eyes of fans all over the world.

Ciccarelli and Levick will be joined by three very different personalities, two of whom are preparing very big fights. The third is a well respected journalist with a sense of humor that can entertain the masses.

Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez will kick things off to discuss his long awaited arrival in the UFC. The Cesar Gracie trained fighter has been considered to be one of the top five lightweights in the world and will get an opportunity to prove that right off the bat when he faces current UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson at UFC on Fox 7 in April. Melendez has held the Strikeforce title since December of 2009 and successfully defended the belt four times during his second run as champion. El Nino has a career record of 21-2 and has won his last seven fights. His lone losses have come against Josh Thomson and Mitsuhiro Ishida. Melendez was able to extract revenge from both men, including Thomson twice.

Former WEC Featherweight Champion and two-time UFC Bantamweight title contender Urijah Faber will call in next to discuss his upcoming bout against Ivan Menjivar at UFC 157. Faber is considered the leader of Team Alpha Male and is one of the UFC’s most marketable stars. The California Kid has been in a total of 11 title fights for the WEC and UFC combined. He is 6-5 in those bouts with wins against Jens Pulver, Dominick Cruz and Cole Escovedo, his losses have come against Cruz, Mike Brown (2X), Jose Aldo and Renan Barao. The 33-year-old Faber is never far away from title contention and a win over Menjivar will inch him closer to another crack at the UFC bantamweight title.

Fight Magazine contributor Bear Frazer is one of MMA’s top journalists and has a very entertaining personality. The Long Island born Frazer is a huge wrestling fan and will talk for hours about how much better wrestling was in the 90’s as compared to today. Frazer is currently working on a project called “The Bam Theory” among other things and will definitely have listeners laughing throughout his time on the show.
