After securing an impressive rear-naked choke in the very first frame of the fight over Justin Salas (after an accidental cut caused during his warmup almost halted the scheduled bout), it looks as though Thiago Tavares will look to make a new home at 145 lbs. Tavares has always shown amazing potential in the UFC’s lightweight division. However, despite flashes of brilliance, he has had setbacks on more than one occasion (faltering earlier this year to Khabib Nurmagomedov). At featherweight, he would look to start anew and avoid such setbacks. Tavares acknowledges that it will be Dana White and Joe Silva who give him the green light to drop to featherweight, but he believes they will see his reasoning and motive.
“I’ve proved that I’m strong at 155,” he said. “But I believe I could be even stronger and more competitive at 145. I’m a UFC fighter and I’ll do anything they want, though. I have to work a lot to fight at 155, and I would easily make 145.”
The Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist was asked not long after his win this past Saturday if he would like to fight at the UFC’s event on February 8th in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil, early next year. Should the stars align, we may see this as his debut at 145 lbs.
