“He has nothing else to prove. He’s the champion for so long, he’s at the top. I understand that he needs to some time off, I guess, for whatever reason he claims. He was a great champion and now it’s going to be even more exciting for the welterweight division, for all the guys that want that belt. The welterweight division is so stacked, so many great fighters, and all the Top 10 are really tough. It’s not easy to get a title shot, but I’m looking forward to that challenge.”
These words are coming from former Strikeforce 170-pound champion, Tarec Saffiedine. Saffiedine expressed in a recent interview with MMA Fighting, that even though he is a big fan of recently retired UFC welterweight champion, Georges St.
Pierre, his absence my spark a new sort of excitement within the division. He also understands that a break from fighting after defending such a dominant and constantly sought-after position for so long would be a good thing for “Rush.”
Although he knows that he would not be facing St. Pierre in the cage anytime soon, his eagerness shows just the kind of excitement he mentioned, as well as excitement for the two men currently fighting for the throne. When speaking about the upcoming title fight, Saffiedine had this to say:
“Man, that’s a great fight. I can’t wait to watch that fight. It’s going to be hard. They both have knockout power. Both looked really good in their last fight, even though Johnny lost. Robbie has been looking really great lately. Whoever lands that hand will get the win, I guess.”
Saffiedine himself will make his highly anticipated debut at UFC Fight Night 34 against Hyun Gyu Lim January 4th, 2014 in Marina Bay, Singapore.
