Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is set to make his highly anticipated return to the Octagon on June 6. According to the folks at MMAFighting.com, ‘No Love’ has been rebooked to fight Raphael Assuncao on the June 6 fight card.

Early on in Raphael Assuncao’s professional career, like most MMA fighters starting out, he was fighting anyone at any time. When a call came in for his fifth pro fight in Duluth, Georgia, the Brazilian accepted it not knowing he would be fighting a soon to be BMF champion, Jorge Masvidal. Assuncao started his career out at lightweight and on April 21, 2005, at Full Throttle 1, the Brazilian was taking on a fellow undefeated fighter in 5-0, Jorge Masvidal.

On Saturday night, the UFC made it’s first stop of the year in Brazil with the 13-fight UFC Fortaleza card. Headlining the card was a battle of two top bantamweight contenders in Raphael Assuncao and Marlon Moraes. Ultimately, Moraes submitted Assuncao in the first round to become the clear cut number one contender in the bantamweight division.

Since then, Assuncao has gone 2-0 and is most likely the number one contender given Dominick Cruz is hurt and Cody Garbrandt has already lost twice to TJ Dillashaw.

In the penultimate fight of the UFC on Fox 23 undercard, long-time bantamweight contender Raphael Assuncao scored a crucial win over Aljamain Sterling. In a post fight interview with UFC reporter Megan Olivi, the Brazilian talent was asked who he’d like to take on next. After a moment of consideration, he made a courteous callout of former champ Dominick Cruz, who surrendered the bantamweight title to Cody Garbrandt in December. “I think Dominick Cruz would make a lot of sense right now,” Assuncao said. “He’s right there up in the top rankings. I don’t see any other guy. I need to get good consistency in my fight career.”
