‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson’s ultimate goal? ‘Having the most title defenses in UFC history’

Mighty Mouse Johnson

Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson may not be the big-name pay-per-view draw that Ronda Rousey is, but that was never his goal when he stepped foot into the octagon. Johnson has now successfully defended his UFC Flyweight Championship six times and will be looking to extend the streak when he faces John Dodson at UFC 191 in September.

As dominant as Johnson’s reign as champion has been, his bout with Dodson in January 2013 was the closest championship fight he has had in the octagon. While “Mighty Mouse’s” other successful defenses saw him earn knockout of the night and submission of the night honors, Dodson was the only man to take him to the limit and earn fight of the night.

Though Dodson was a great test in 2013, Johnson feels that he has improved more than Dodson in those two years. “I look at the previous fight and I look at this one as a brand new fight,” Johnson told Inside MMA. “Obviously, Dodson’s had three fights since we fought; I’ve had the five title defenses and I think he’s improved a little bit and I’ve improved way more than he has because I’ve been so active.”

When all is said and done and Johnson hangs up his gloves, he wants to go down as the greatest champion in UFC history with the most successful title defenses to his name. “Just reaching that ultimate goal, which is having the most successful title defenses in UFC history, for the men’s division, because [Ronda Rousey] is on a tear right now so I don’t want to jump in her pond,” Johnson admitted. “That goal is ten, well eleven, obviously the record right now is ten and I’m at six right now so I’ve got five more to go and then I’ll keep on racking them up.”

Anderson Silva sits atop the throne with ten successful championship defenses. Do you think “Mighty Mouse” has what it takes to get to eleven, or will Silva remain king? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
