“I’m telling people I have the fight. I believe it will happen. I believe it will happen in June. I don’t know the venue, I don’t know the exact date, and I haven’t been contacted. I don’t have a contract; I guess that’s my real message. However, the Countdown show, you know when the UFC comes and out and they film you, they’re scheduled to come out to West Linn, Ore., in two days to film the show,” Sonnen revealed. So I go now wait a minute, I don’t have this fight yet, you guys know something I don’t? They said we booked plane tickets, we’re coming out. So read between the lines. I took that as really good news.”
So what’s the hold up with the contracts?
It could be only one of two things. The first of which is that Anderson Silva is employing mind games and keeping the Oregon native guessing and in the dark about their rematch.
The second and most likely reason is that the UFC has yet to firm up a host city and venue for the event. If you recall, the UFC was hoping to book a stadium show in Brazil with this fight as the headliner, but according to multiple reports they are having difficulty securing a stadium. So, without a venue locked, there can be no definite date for the event, and with no definite date, there can be no contracted agreement.
The fact that the UFC production crew is set to come out and film Sonnen for their countdown show this week is a good sign that this fight is a go.
