There isn’t an MMA organization in the world right now, other than the UFC and Strikeforce, with as much momentum and fan appeal as the Invicta Fighting Championships. The promotion, which is focused entirely on female fighters, has only been producing events since April of this year but judging from the amount of viewers they have been attracting you would think they have been in business for years.
Fresh off the heels of their record setting second event in July, the organization is set to return in October for what should be yet another explosive night of Women’s MMA action. We recently had the opportunity to speak with CEO Shannon Knapp live on the air during the debut episode of BJPenn.com Radio.
Knapp was kind enough to share a few tiny details regarding Invicta FC 3, and while she wouldn’t tell us any of the matchups booked for the card just yet, she did give us three names. Two out of the three have competed on the last card but one fighter will be making her anticipated debut for the organization.
“We will be announcing the full fight card sometime next week and right now we are sitting on 13 or 15 fights again,” Knapp told BJPenn.com Radio.
“I will throw you a few bones, I won’t tell you who these girls are fighting yet but you’re going to see Michelle Waterson [debut] and Shayna Baszler and Sarah D’Alelio will also be back.”
Known as “The Karate Hottie”, Waterson is one of the most popular women’s fighters in the game today. Currently ranked as the #5 atomweight in the world, Waterson is the total package of both beauty and ferocity.
Training out of Jackson’s MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Waterson will enter the Invicta cage with a three-fight winning streak. Knapp wouldn’t tell us who her opponent would be but with the event being headlined by an atomweight title bout between Jessica Penne and Naho Sugiyama, one can only assume that a win would put Waterson in the mix to fight the new champion.
The returning D’Alelio is currently undefeated in Invicta with victories at both events. Her recent submission victory over BJJ black belt Vanessa Porto put her on the map so to speak in the 135-lbs division. Knapp expressed great interest in seeing her back in the cage in October.
“D’Alelio was in full beast mode in her last fight and really surprised the heck out of me too. She really looked outstanding and deserves to be back on the next card so like I said you’re going to see her and Shayna return [at Invicta FC 3] but you don’t know who these girls are fighting, just yet.”
Invicta FC 3 will take place October 6 at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. Much like their previous two events, the entire fight card will be streamed live and free via their website InvictaFC.com.
