Shane Carwin Retires from Mixed Martial Arts

May 7, 2013 8:04 pm by Jake Chastain

It’s finally official. One of the greatest knock out artists in the UFC’s heavyweight history has finally decided to throw in the towel and retire from professional mixed martial arts.

Shane Carwin made the announcement today via his trusty twitter account. Here is what the former UFC Interim Champion tweeted:

“Officially retired [today],” he wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to my family, friends and fans! #dreambig GOD BLESS!!!”

Carwin, a heavy handed heavyweight with a Division II National Wrestling Title to back it up,  will retire at the age of 38 after having several injuries plague the end of his career. Carwin came into the UFC like a wrecking ball by knocking-out his first 4 opponents in the first round while on his way to gaining the UFC interim title. However, he then lost to Brock Lesnar in a title unification fight and dropped his following fight to eventual champion Junior Dos Santos.

After coming back from several back injuries and surgeries Carwin was picked to coach on TUF 16 opposite of Roy Nelson. The two were set to square off following the conclusion of the show but Carwin suffered a knee injury that ultimately led to another surgery, more rehab, and eventually his retirement.

Carwin compiled a 12-2 MMA record with all 12 of his wins coming by way of either KO (7) or submission (5). He is arguably the hardest hitting heavyweight in UFC history and will be missed and remembered by MMA fans worldwide.

From all of us here at, we wish Shane Carwin all the best in the next chapter of his life. Cheers to you, Mr. Carwin. Thanks for all the great fights, Champ!
