News broke yesterday that UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo had sustained an injury and was forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Frankie Edgar at UFC 153.
As if that news wasn’t enough to panic UFC officials, the organization also had to scrap the co-main event set for 153 between Quinton Jackson and Glover Teixeira, as “Rampage” suffered a shoulder injury.
So, like a bad case of deja vu, the UFC is once again scrambling for a replacement main event. While the other main card fights set for UFC 153 are good (especially in comparison to UFC 151), they aren’t main event worthy. However, a possible new main event could be in the works between Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen at a catchweight of 195lbs.
via Fighters Only:
A fight between Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen is a possible replacement main event for UFC 153 on October 13.
Silva has publicly voiced willingness to meet Sonnen if the UFC officially offers the match and sources say that the bout is under consideration. It would take place at a catchweight of 195lbs – between middleweight and light-heavy – to reflect the short-notice nature of the bout.
Wanderlei Silva also commented on the subject during an interview with Portal do Vale Tudo today, expressing his interest in both fighting Chael Sonnen and competing in Rio.
“I accept to fight any one and with him it would be tasteful. It would be a bout that people would like to see. I wasn’t offered it yet, but if the boss needs me and I can contribute to make the fans happy, I would feel so glad.”
For now, Chael Sonnen is still scheduled to face Forrest Griffin at UFC 155 and has yet to make any comments in the media about possibly fighting in Rio. That said, the UFC is in desperate need of a main event and with Sonnen and Wanderlei already having a history of trash-talking one another, it may be a desirable enough match-up for the UFC to entertain putting together.
