Rumor Has It: Could the Big Announcement Be A Super Fight for Rousey?

Women’s Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is, according to UFC President Dana White, “the biggest star in UFC history.” Her talent is unprecedented and in a league of insanely talented women, she’s still miles apart from an opponent that seems to be equal to her skill. Her recent bout with Sara McMann at UFC 170 brought her face to face with a fellow Olympian that most assumed was her best match and the best chance for taking the title. A 66-second stoppage via liver kick quickly ended that talk. With her win streak stronger than ever, there are only a few fighters that fans are actually eager to see her fight, and the prospects for the position of Ronda’s next opponents are either highly unlikely, or extremely quiet at the moment.

Recently a rumor has been going around the MMA world, ignited by the ominous words of Joe Rogan while making an appearance on the Kevin & Bean Show on Friday.

“Within the next probably week or so a huge announcement will come about women’s fighting and I’ll be back in [the studio] and we’ll talk some more,” Rogan said. “It’s going to be crazy. Madness. I wish I could [talk about it now], but I would betray the confidence of my friend and employer.”

With Ronda being the biggest star in women’s fighting (and arguably, in the UFC currently), it is easy to immediately begin speculating that the news is going to pertain to her. IF indeed it does, this could bring forth three possible outcomes.

The first, and most likely of the three, is that Rousey could possibly be matched up with number one contender Cat Zingano. Zingano, who was slated to fight Rousey last year, was sidelined due to a knee injury and replaced, both in the match and as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter, by Rousey’s longtime rival, Miesha Tate. Zingano was then supposed to face Rousey at UFC 170 instead of McMann, but was again sidelined by person tragedy, when her husband Mauricio Zingano died from supposed suicide a little over a month ago. Since this horrible incident, Cat has been off the radar, with the UFC giving her the privacy she deserves during this time and still keeping her status as number one contender. However, stories have been surfacing such as this one from, stating that despite her circumstances, Zingano has been trying to move forward and continue work towards earning the belt, and a return could be possible for her as early as June or July of this year. This would put her just in time for Ronda Rousey’s second fight of the year.

The second option is more of a surprise, and would certainly be big news in the MMA world: the return of Gina Carano. Carano was the “face of women’s MMA” in Strikeforce, and has been mentioned by Rousey as being a huge personal inspiration and terrific athlete. Carano stepped away from MMA over four years ago to pursue an acting career, but she left in a way that could easily allow her to slide back into the MMA world.

The third option is one that I personally find to be the most far-fetched, based on the fact that it has been shut down MULTIPLE times in the last few weeks. People are still hoping for a match-up between Rousey and Cris Cyborg. Through all of her earnest efforts, call-outs, and entreaties to Dana White, nothing has really come of this one except frustration on the part of White, and more intrigue from the fans. Though this would be an exciting development, out of the three possible match-up rumors, this one has already been debunked enough to put it on the bottom of the list.

And this is all IF the new women’s MMA news even has to do with Rousey. So I want to know Penn Nation, what do you think about the big news for women’s MMA? Do you think it’s a super match-up for reigning queen Ronda Rousey? Or do you think it will possibly go in another direction? Leave me your comments with your best idea!
