Rousey Opens as Massive Favorite over Carmouche

December 11, 2012 11:53 am by Jake Chastain

Just a few days ago we found out that the newly-crowned UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey is inked-in to make her octagon debut against Liz Carmouche at the freshly announced UFC 157 event on February 23rd, 2013 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The crowning of Rousey, who is coming over to the UFC from Strikeforce, and the fight announcement came from UFC President Dana White during last week’s UFC on FOX 5 pre-fight presser. Fans and media members both seemed to like the idea of the Women’s title fight headlining the event. Well, now that a few days have passed and the fight announcement has had the time to sink in to the MMA community I find it fair to take a look at some of the early fighting odds for this first ever UFC Women’s fight;

The guys over at Best Fight Odds have The Champion coming in as a heavy favorite at -1200 while they have Carmouche at +600. So are these odds fair or is Carmouche being overlooked and under-accredited? Let’s first meet our fighters…

“Rowdy” Ronda Rousey (6-0 MMA) is one of the brightest MMA stars on the planet. She possesses an unblemished record and has never seen the end of a fight. Rousey has finished every single one of her bouts by submission via armbar. It seems that a women’s super-fight with Brazilian wrecking-ball Cris “Cyborg” Santos is still looming on the horizon for Rousey but with circumstances negating those negotiations it was Liz Carmouche who stepped up to the plate and challenged the undefeated champion.

Liz Carmouche (7-2 MMA) is a Marine Corps combat veteran and holds a very credible MMA resume. She fought Marloes Coenen for the Strikeforce title in early 2011 but lost via submission in a fight that I felt she was winning. She has since lassoed two consecutive finishing-victories over Ashleigh Curry and Kaitlin Young under the Invicta FC banner. Carmouche has good wrestling skills and is known for her ground-and-pound and her smothering, grinding pace.

Carmouche is well deserving of a title fight with Rousey but is she deserving of these lopsided odds? We’ll find out on February 23rd at UFC 157.

UFC 157 is also expected to feature a light-heavyweight contest between Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida and the return of Urijah Faber as he takes on the dangerous Ivan Menjivar at bantamweights.
