Ronda Rousey: Injuries Were Preexisting, Knee Surgery for Maintenance

July 5, 2014 11:13 pm by Jonathan Kirschner

Ronda Rousey may have defeated challenger Alexis Davis in less than twenty seconds, but she will still have to sit on the sidelines for some nagging injuries she suffered in the past.

During the fight, Ronda Rousey landed an overhand right that tore open an existing cut on her knuckle. She went into the details during the post-fight presser:

“It turns out that for the last two camps at 168 and 170, I kept ripping my knuckle open. I kept covering it up and hitting on it still. All I did was just make sure it didn’t get infected. I guess I ended up developing a cyst under my knuckle. After the McMann fight I should have taken it more seriously. I ended up ripping it open with that first overhand right and just got nine stitches in my hand.”

As for the knee surgery, she explained it is purely for maintenance. She did not suffer an injury going into the fight during camp. After years and years of combat sports, your body will start to break down and you will need to take time off to recover some time. Rousey is approaching this intelligently and is getting a minor surgery done to her knee. It’s so minor, in fact, that she says she will be walking out of the building she gets the surgery done in and she will be 100% two weeks after.

That is a fighting champion.
