Ronda Rousey is currently undefeated in her mixed martial arts career and has recently been praised by UFC president Dana White as the biggest star that the UFC has ever had. Ronda was quick to credit some of her savvy, both business wise and in the cage, to one of the biggest stars in another combat sport in Floyd Mayweather.
“He is someone I aspire to be very much like in a business sense,” Rousey said during a media scrum in Vegas on Wednesday. “I try to take whatever lessons that I can, and my coach definitely tries to throw some stylistic things my way that he also learned from him.”
If you’re not familiar with Floyd “Money” Mayweather then you’ve been living under a rock. The undefeated, highly decorated, boxing champion is one of the most successful fighters in history and the highest pay-per-view draw in boxing today.
Ronda also admitted that she’s used other techniques learned by studying Mayweather that came in handy when she injured her shoulder in camp however, she didn’t want to reveal too much and stated that we’d have to wait until after her bout this Saturday to learn any more of her secrets.
Ronda is set to face off against fellow undefeated Olypian Sara McMann in a clash of styles as McMann was a very accomplished Olympic wrestler.
The two are scheduled to meet for the main event of UFC 170 this Saturday in Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Events Center with the event airing live on pay-per-view.
The bout is a very interesting one as the two are stylistically rather even, and may have to rely on their other skills to neutralize the other. And with Ronda sharpening her boxing skills it may just lead to the two throwing down.
If that’s the case then Ronda better hope that studying “Money” Mayweather will pay off. Both Ronda and her coach have stated that they believe Ronda’s striking has not only improved but is the best in the division. We’ll see for sure come Saturday.
