Ronda Rousey Credits Gina Carano’s Success As Inspiration To Pursue MMA

Before Ronda Rousey was the face of women’s MMA there was another. And apparently Gina Carano (pictured) was a huge driving force in influencing the current champ to strive for a career in the cage. No matter how unlikely it seemed at the time.

Judo Olympian and UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey took some time in Vegas to speak with the media on Wednesday and touched on how, during her Judo days, she had dreams of stepping into the cage.

“Before the Olympics I would secretly already think about it. After I saw Gina Carano fight, I would secretly already think about it, and it was too stupid to ever mention” Rousey said. “I would get shot down, I knew, if I said anything like it.

“I remember, actually, being in Wakefield, Massachusetts, and walking over to Home Depot where I was cashier, listening to my headphones, thinking about what it would be like to be an MMA champion. Then I was just like, ‘It’s so stupid.’”

But no matter how “stupid” it seemed Ronda couldn’t ignore the fact that even after a tremendously successful career in Judo a transition to MMA just seemed to fit.

“There was still something missing that I hadn’t quite made it. I knew in the back of my mind I didn’t want to go back (to Judo) and now I see why and I understand.”

Ronda is scheduled to face off against fellow undefeated Olympian Sara McMann this Saturday for the main event of UFC 170 which takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Mandalay Bay Event Center. The event is scheduled to air on pay-per-view.
