Anderson Silva is okay with fighting Lyoto Machida… Jacare is okay with fighting Anderson… Lyoto knocked his friend Mark Munoz clean out… Anderson would fight Jacare… and now, Renan Barao is apparently willing to fight his friend, Marlon Moraes.
It’s anarchy, I tells ya!
That, or UFC fighters are finally realizing that – if you’re going to be friends / training partners with multiple people that fight in your weight division – you will more than likely end up fighting a few of those friends.
UFC Bantamweight champion Renan Barao, as I mentioned, is one such fighter who realizes that friendships need to be put aside for the greater good. Specifically, the greater good of your legacy. After all, this sport moves fast, and you only have a small window of time to “be all that you can be”, before the new generation of faster, stronger, and more skilled fighters are knocking at the door… and you shouldn’t be spending that small window of time, trying to figure out how not to fight certain people.
Marlon Moraes, the current Bantamweight champion for WSOF, is a good friend and training partner of Barao’s. And yes, since Moraes is currently fighting for another organization, Barao doesn’t need to spend a lot of time considering what would happen if they had to meet in the cage. That being said, the UFC is always looking to scoop up talent from other orgs, and it wouldn’t be too shocking to see Moraes donning the UFC gloves in the near future.
And if that were to happen? Well, Barao said this Wednesday during a UFC media day in São Paulo that he wouldn’t avoid this fight, if Moraes signed with the UFC and got the title shot (quotes courtesy of BloodyElbow.com):
We are friends but I don’t see any problem fighting him. I don’t even think about that now because he’s in other organization. But, if this fight ends up happening, we’ll put our friendship aside and go toe to toe.
But, what if it the UFC asked him to fight not just a friend, but a training partner and teammate who also calls Nova Uniao home? Such as Eduardo Dantas, the Bellator Bantamweight champion?
Dudu (Dantas) is my brother, we are always together. I would never fight against him or anyone of Nova Uniao.
Well… at least there’s progress.
Barao’s second defense of his belt will come on May 23, against T.J. Dillashaw. And in case you missed their epic staredown (or you wanted to see technology create an awkward moment), you can catch it here. You’re welcome.
