Longtime veteran of women’s MMA, Julie Kedzie, announced her retirement from the sport Friday night following her fight against Bethe Correira at UFC Fight Night 33 in Brisbane, Australia.

Kedzie and Correira fought in the opening bout of the night, a three-round affair that saw Correira walk away with the split-decision victory.  Kedzie would post on Twitter later Friday evening that, going into the fight, she and her coach decided this would be her final fight.

“Before walking out to my fight today,” the Tweets read, “I had a long talk with my coach and we decided that this would be my last MMA fight[…]  I would have loved to have gone out on a win, but c’est la vie-don’t leave it to the judges. Heartbreak is a huge part of this sport…but now it’s time for me to accept that I can give more to the sport by stepping back and taking role in helping to develop other fighters (sic).”

She concluded her series of Tweets by expressing her gratitude.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to the @UFC, my team, and all of you who have made me achieve some amazing dreams.

Kedzie retires with a professional record of 16 wins and 13 losses.  Since her debut almost a decade ago, Kedzie has fought a number of the sport’s top female athletes including a 3-round against Gina Carano in the first live female MMA event aired on television at EliteXC: Destiny in 2007.
