The UFC certainly closed out 2013 with a bang.  Early estimates indicate that UFC 168 sold somewhere in the ballpark of 1,025,000 pay-per-view buys.  The UFC increased the price for this card by $5, and that translates to UFC 168 being easily one of the most lucrative events the UFC has put on.

UFC 168 saw UFC middleweight Chris Weidman defend his belt against the last man to hold the title in Anderson Silva.  The finish, which saw a horrific break to Anderson Silva’s leg after he kicked Weidman’s knee, was one of the most widely discussed end to a fight in years.  The card also saw the much-anticipated rematch between UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate.  This garnered much attention from the most recent season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’ on which both women served as opposing coaches.

The UFC does not release its pay-per-view numbers publicly, but with the estimates, the PPV buys alone account for somewhere between $56-60 million, MMA Fighting reported. Late pay-per-view buys could increase these numbers even more, as many fans may have bought the event after the attention received by the main event.  UFC 168 earned a live gate of $6,277,732.50.

Only one other UFC event has surpassed these numbers: UFC 100, which took place in 2009.  Similar to UFC 168, UFC 100 offered two big-drawing championship bouts that featured then-heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and then-welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

The success of UFC 168 came after a number of events in the last quarter of 2013 that failed to meet expectations in terms of the number of viewers.
