Orthopedic Surgeon Says Jon Jones Out For 6-8 Weeks Following Toe Injury

Following Saturdays gruesome ordeal at UFC 159 in which light heavyweight champion Jon Jones mangled his left toe in the midst of dominating Chael Sonnen, the MMA community has been clamoring to know how severely the bones of ‘Bones’ were broken.

It appears that his toe wasn’t broken at all.

The Chief Orthopedic Surgeon at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Group, Dr. Robert Klapper, appeared on UFC Tonight yesterday evening as he disclosed the facts about the champion’s injury to Kenny Florian. Klapper gave Florian the breakdown of the injury, stating, “It’s just a dislocation, in six weeks it’s healed, then you start range of motion strengthening rehab. He’ll be back to fighting in six to eight weeks.” Doctor Klapper also went in to detail as to how the injury occurred and the mechanics behind the injury telling the UFC Tonight crew, “It’s a very significant injury to a very important spot of the body.” The Chief Surgeon went on to say, “When you see him dislocate, which is what he did, and deform that big toe, you’re really disrupting a very important joint in the body.”

This comes as good news to fight fans as most of us assumed Jones would be sidelined for longer than eight weeks. While the injury was devastating to watch and there is no definitive timetable for Jon’s return, with the proper medical treatment and rehabilitation we can expect to see ‘Bones’ back inside the octagon in a timely manner. The champion has a pair eager challengers in Lyoto Machida and Alexander Gustafsson, who have hinted at facing each other in a title contender eliminator this summer. The idea seems perfectly timed now that Jones will need time off, and both Machida and Gustafsson wish to stay active.
