One Last UFC Hoorah for “Big Country” this Weekend?

| This weekend “Big Country” Roy Nelson (19-7 MMA, 6-3 UFC) could be making his final UFC appearance as he steps into the octagon with Stipe Miocic at UFC 161 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The bout will mark the final fight on Nelson’s current UFC contract and there is no telling what the promotion will work out with “Big Country” following this scrap.

Nelson has become an essential piece to the UFC heavyweight division. Even though Dana White has had his issues and troubles with Roy Nelson there is no denying that he has added depth and talent to the UFC’s heavyweight roster. Nelson has never fought for the UFC title but he has come as close as you can without getting that shot. He’s fought most of the best fighters in the division, like Frank Mir, JDS, Mirko Cro Cop, Dave Herman, Matt Mitrione, and the list goes on. He’s currently riding a three-fight win streak, he’s coached a season of TUF for the company, he won a season of TUF as a competitor, and he’s always a tough match-up for anyone and a fun fight to watch for the fans.

Nelson is a top tier fighter in the world, despite his nonathletic build, and carries some of the heaviest overhand punching power in the business.

Apparently the UFC recently offered Nelson a contract extension but he rejected the terms. It is also rumored that the UFC has already stared making future plans for Nelson, as it was made public that they like a future match-up between Nelson and newly-signed star, Daniel Cormier.

With all of the recent signings happening with Bellator and Nelson’s rejection of a UFC contract extension it will be interesting to see how things unfold in this scenario, starting with Nelson’s battle with Miocic this weekend at UFC 161. Will an impressive win get him a UFC contract with the right amount of money and the right fights to make him stay? We’ll find out in the near future.

So what do you think, fight fans? Is Nelson worth fighting for and paying to bring back to the UFC or are his best days behind him? Let’s hear what you think, Penn Nation!
